The Density of Ice and Water

Despite having the same molecules, ice and liquid water have different molecular arrangements depending on whether they are in a liquid or solid form. Liquid water has a higher density than ice because its molecules may fill voids and cluster closer together. Because of its reduced density, ice can float over water. Yet, because the heavier hydrogen atoms form stronger bonds, heavy water ice, in which the hydrogen atoms have both a proton and a neutron, is denser and can sink.
