The Effect of Salt on Physical Properties

Due to the presence of salt, seawater has different physical characteristics than freshwater. In contrast to freshwater, which freezes at zero degrees Celsius, seawater often freezes at roughly minus 1.8 degrees Celsius, according to Sand. Seawater beneath the ice shelf of Antarctica, on the other hand, can get as cold as minus 2.2 degrees Celsius. This is because, as Lien stated, pressure prevents seawater from freezing until it is colder than minus two degrees Celsius between the ice and sea floor, which is hundreds of metres below sea level.

The weight of seawater and freshwater also differs noticeably, notably in how temperature influences it. Around four degrees Celsius, freshwater is the heaviest, but seawater becomes increasingly heavier as it gets closer to freezing. As a result, the coldest seawater is found at the ocean’s bottom, as opposed to a lake, which can have a bottom temperature of four degrees and a surface temperature of zero degrees.
