The Secret to Life on Mars May Be Found in the Ice

Polar ice caps, permafrost, and a small number of glaciers are where Mars keeps its data (both dry ice and frozen water). If the planet can support life, its ice deposits may offer critical information.

Until recently, scientists assumed that the planet’s extraordinarily low temperatures and thin atmosphere prohibited water from surviving in its liquid condition. Yet, NASA presented strong evidence in 2015 that there is, at the very least, sporadic briny water on Mars. Although the origin of the water is unknown, one idea postulates that melting underlying ice is to blame. Could life exist in this low amount of water under the planet’s existing environmental conditions? Future Mars missions will want to investigate this further.
